It is time for another cover art. I think that will be the twist for my new fan fiction in this genre. I have gone back to a caricature style. That way it is easier to capture the expressions.

Steele Others: A Tale with Two Covers
![]() |
| What is Laura hiding? |
![]() |
| A ménage à trois? |
I was first intrigued with producer Michael Gleason's full fifth season treatment with a new love interest, Eddie. He comes from Laura's past. The change I made was to have the character introduced later, after Remington and Laura have been time living together for some time.
In the cover art, I gave Laura Holt, Stephanie Zimbalist' 1990s look.
For the first cover, I used an expression from Stephanie's movie "The Killing Mind". For the second cover, I finally got a handle on Remington Steele. Laura was from the episode "Steele Among the Living". Eddie was a composite of three actors.

Inspiration Needed
I have been writing more of late. One goal is a chance to be published in a magazine. This will be my first new original fiction entry in a while.
Unlike fanfiction, it's not that easy to envision. I have half an idea right now and only a little over one month to write it. Only plus side is the low (1000) word count.
Meanwhile, I am continuing the next chapter for my Remington Steele story. I hope to spend a week before I need to switch gears.

Steele Reeling: An Unpublished Rewrite
The stench of death overwhelmed Laura, when she realized the carriage was where the Ripper had his victims. She covered her mouth with her hand, her tears threatening to spill.
The only words of reassurance to Mr. Steele was spoken in a muffled, "I'm fine."
As detectives led Galt away, Laura accepted a proffered hand down from the cab.
With feet planted firmly on the ground, Laura took a breath and then suddenly took a step back to retch right behind the rear wheel, narrowly missing Steele's midsection. He could only look on helplessly.
At the first wobbly step, Steele took Laura by the elbow and guided her towards the waiting paramedics.
Later in the hotel room ...
On instinct, Laura tensed up in defense, arms ending up in two fists, until she opened her eyes and stared into Mildred's concerned gaze.
"Mildred! Oh!" she sighed with relief and relaxed in the older woman's arms, trying to will the thumping in her chest to quiet itself.
Seeing that Mildred had her in a cradle hold, "What am I doing on the floor?" she asked.
"You tell me, Hon. When you didn't return, and police reports of another attack." Mildred noticed the bruising on Laura's face. "Are you OK?"

To get back into the practice of writing, it is always good to do a rewrite. Written above are some re-imagined scenes from one of my fan fictions.

How They Got There
I've been thinking about writing one for 2 whole years. Watching the only show I've ever taped whenever I was in between jobs, and once in reverse order, it was just always on my mind.
Doggett and Reyes being left out of The X-Files post season 9, made me wonder even more about them. I had originally wanted to do a 'where are they now' story, but that's already been done. It took a re-watch of the 5 episodes that gave us their shared history, including their penultimate episode Release that really inspired me to write a prequel just for them.

Next Chapter in Creativity
To think, I used to dread drawing hair. Now there is volume and texture. Could it turn into part time vocation? Perhaps towards retirement.
After two whole years on a single production, my mind is opening up with new ideas again. I am hoping they will keep on growing.
In case you haven't noticed it, I have been writing quite frequently. It hasn't been that busy at work. So. I am practicing for the CBC creative nonfiction contest. I am writing anything and everything I could to keep the words flowing. I even submitted an animated short story idea.
During the coming holiday week, when I will be off, I hope to make a paper automaton of a carousel. I've worked it out roughly. I just need to execute it.

The Living Bride Returns - Ongoing Challenges
"Meifeng had not been in touch with her extended family since she had ran off with Leo. Ming was the only one she had had any contact with these past few years. Through his correspondence, she was able to learn that what was left of the Chens still lived at that house. They retained the garden and built their homestead on the property."Is this what it's like to know when some ideas doesn't work out. I've had it in my mind to continue the story at the train station. I even had a scene in the cab or rickshaw, involving a folded up fifty yuan note. But it wasn't a good enough hook for the next installment. So I went back to laying out the character relationships.
I've learned this much. I don't want to add any more characters into the mix. The core of the story surrounds the interchange between just three people. How their lives were affected by their past actions. The passage I just written (above), will be a nice segue into a flashback sequence that will introduce the rest of the main characters.
The story is taking shape more or less in the notes I scribbled on paper, however technically, I still don't know who these characters are. Hopefully, it will come as I keep plotting. It was why I held off from writing for so long. Meanwhile, I made another drawing to serve as a cover. I can't draw like my artist colleagues, but I did learn from a tutorial on how to create silhouettes in Photoshop. At least, it resembles the sketch I made earlier. If I squint at it, it kind of looks like a Chinese brush painting.

Shanghai Interlude on the Blog
Celebrating my very first completed story, I have been working on various versions for sharing. There is now a PDF file up on Google Docs. The link is available at the bottom of this blog. Simply click on the Shanghai Interlude banner to download for your eReader. Still learning all the features of the Calibre eBook manager. It's really handy for conversions. The new PDF includes a cover and is a smaller format for eReaders. I am eager to upload this onto my device.
Also, I now have a Chinese translation on Google Docs. It's the first time, I used this feature. Although, it gives a complete translated text, it still is not perfect. Translations are seldom perfect. Grammar is almost always lost in translation. But I like it enough to keep using it in future.
It's been a long time since I last written a new word. Because, the character relationships and plot is a lot more complex, I would like to mull over it some more. Rewriting Shanghai Interlude made me cautious of how to handle it.
Anyway, these little projects help me immerse in that world. That's not a bad thing.

Stages of Imaginings - Why People Fall from the Sky
If I had to describe what inspires me, it is every time I stare outside a window.
The earliest I could remember noticing the world outside was shortly after starting school. It had been raining. The streets were flooded, water yellow with muddy run off from the mountain. When a tire floated along, the first thing that came to my mind was where's the car. Now I was little, so I didn't know that there could just be tires lying about. More importantly, I made my first connection.
The world was full of strange ideas. And school can be a place to find them. For instance, the way religion was introduced through film. It was too long ago to remember. I remember seeing someone named Jesus. I supposed that was an Easter film. What do you suppose I see when I look out the window then? People falling from the sky like rain.
We talked about Christmas at home too. Back then in Hong Kong, I knew where the presents came from. It didn't come from some old man dressed in some red suit. I saw my father hide them on the top bunk. Since it was bad form to spoil it for little kids, it was fortunate that I said very little then, huh?

Character Descriptions in The Living Bride Returns
I was getting nowhere in the plot of my story. The setting had been difficult to nail down. It speaks to my inability to embrace it as I once did. So in order to reignite my interest in the project, I have spent time on honing the descriptions of the characters in the core of the narrative. This is what I have so far.
Ma
The matriarch of the Chen household. She is a progressive woman, noble to the bone, but holds onto one traditional belief to keep a dream of her son alive. He was her only tie to the world and ripped from existence in a far away land.
When Meifeng and Chen Fu become embroiled in a scandal so harmful to their family name, she orders Meifeng's death in a public drowning to save face. At Li Li and Chen Fu's pleadings Meifeng is able to leave and runaway with Leo.
Li Li
The last of the Chen family's servants. An orphaned raised by the matriarch herself, her main station in life is to be Chen Fu's wife. Nurturing, she took over primary care of young Chen Fu when he out grew his nursemaid. She keeps the peace in the family.
Meifeng's return symbolized Li Li's insecurity. She knows about the history she had with Chen Fu and fears that Chen Fu's love for her had never been resolved, thus destroying the relationship she had struggle to build between them.
Chen Fu
The master's son with his mistress. He was brought home as an infant, after his mother's death. Raised by Li Li, he spent the formative years of his life away at boarding school. He was a robust youth when he completed his education. He and Meifeng maintained a close friendship that grew to be more at the chagrin of the matriarch. Unable to marry for love, he fell into a depression that drove him to military service until he succumbed to consumption. The illness left him sterile when having children meant a great deal to his role in the family.
Learning of a daughter he had never knew born abroad complicates matters. It causes him to lash out at unexpectedly at his wife.
Ming
The older of two brothers that Meifeng first met. He became a newspaper man's apprentice. After reuniting with Meifeng years later, he moved to another city with his new bride.
Leo
A diplomat's son. He was one of the suitors vying to be Meifeng's living husband after she officially married the Chen family ghost. He would have been had Chen Fu not win her heart first.
Meifeng accepting to be his wife was the happiest news he ever had.
Chen Yuan
The immortal form of the Chen elder born. He appeared to Meifeng when she awakens in the underworld facing final judgement. He stands in her defense and gives up his immortality so she may live. The events she experience could had been a dream. No one can say for certain about superstitious beliefs.

Confidently So
When I decided to skip detention and sneak away when I did, I was wrong to assume there would be no consequences. I was in the second grade after all; I thought I could do anything.
What I did that day was bold. I have never did anything like that again. It was perhaps bolder than walking into the boys' washroom, to use their toilets, when the ones in the girls' washroom were out of order. What I did bordered on disobedience in a big way. It alone was a punishable act, but it was better than being disciplined for something so harmless as handing in a poorly written calligraphy script.
I would never have did when I was six years old, when I was in the first grade. I had not really developed the good sense to think independently then. Since I already had the strap, I did not really care to relive the experience all over again.
Getting a slap on the hand wasn't so bad. It is the least severe form of punishment any parent could inflict on a child. But at school, though rare, it is the worst thing... next to getting too much homework, of course.
What made it worst... I did not deserve it. It wasn't entirely my fault that the boy I was sitting next to bumped my elbow and threw off my stroke.
I did not feel at ease until I finally arrived home at our tiny apartment. There was no need to tell anyone about what had happened. I had succeeded in escaping the teacher's ruler as well as the vice principal's metre stick. The only thing left to do is to go back to class the next day and face the full consequences of my actions.
I sat quietly in my seat, when Miss Wong arrived to teach the math lesson. I tried my best not to make eye contact with her, hoping she would not notice me. Her most intimidating feature was a lack of a smile; this made her even more unattractive than she actually looked.
As much as I tried to remain invisible, however my efforts proved fruitless, for Miss Wong did notice. Not only did she notice me, she wasn't going to let me off that easy. She instructed me to remain after class. Fortunately, it was just the one ruler, but it did hurt nonetheless.

First Winter
What is it?
So smooth and cool
to the touch.
You say it is dirty.
Yet when I feel it,
my hands do not soil.
You say it is slippery.
I did not understand,
until I fell on my bum.
All because I had never seen
this... ice.

The Living Bride Returns - Story
It has been months since I started writing this. I got stuck obviously. Unable to come up with a hook, I started to think about motivations for all the characters in my story. To that end, I have an outline of sorts.
Meifeng has been haunted, during the day and at night. She feared it has to do with failure to fulfill her part of in a marriage contract she consented to when she was young. She is certain to find a resolution in going back to the ancestral home in China.
While Lili, her old friend may welcome her home, it would be a painful reminder for Chen Fu, the younger illegitimate Chen son and father of her child. It would be an uncomfortable reunion, especially since an accident left Chen Fu mentally unstable.
After staying the night in her old room, Meifeng goes into town to look for a hotel room and notify her friend Leo where to find her.
Before Meifeng can make the call though, she is involved in a terrible accident, fate unknown.
Waking up in some sort of underworld, Meifeng encounters the spirit of Chen Yuan, her husband in name only. He is an immortal and is as young as the day he died. He has spent the years since his own mother's death learning about his destiny with Meifeng.

The Living Bride Returns - Part 3 (1)
I want to show I have been toiling over the plot of this story. Not as easy as I thought, considering it is mostly character driven. I shall refrain from referring to the sections as chapters, however this is the first of this part I have started for the post. Seeing it in so many places should spur on the word count, not that it matters for my purposes.

In this chapter, I attempt to tie the first part of the past with the present. Hopefully, it answers any questions about Meifeng's background.

The Living Bride Returns
It was just an ordinary day, however, the train depot was bustling and it wasn't even a holiday. The platform was filling up quickly with passengers bound for Canton.
